Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo comments on his possible return in the MCU. Joe and his brother, Anthony Russo, boarded the franchise back in 2014 via Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Due to the great reception to the political thriller, the pair was tapped to direct Captain America: Civil War in 2016. That, too, was a hit, which convinced Marvel Studios that they were the right filmmakers to wrap up the Infinity Saga.

So, together with long-time collaborators, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the Russos started work on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. While tackling the projects was a great opportunity, it also came with immense pressure, especially after the MCU's decent track record. Ultimately, they delivered on that, as well. Therefore, it's no wonder that when news broke out that they are currently in talks to return to the franchise, fans were excited. It was, however, derailed by Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit against Disney regarding Black Widow's same-day release in theaters and Disney+.

Now that it's all been settled, many are wondering how the Russos' supposed discussions are going. Joe sat down with Variety to talk about what went down with Johansson and Disney's lawsuit. But, he was also asked what its recent resolution means to their potential return to the MCU. The filmmaker was careful with his answer, opting to say that “it would be inappropriate for us to comment on a deal if we were in the middle of it.” Unfortunately, he didn't give any additional information regarding the matter.

Right now, the Russo Brothers are currently busy with two projects. The first one is the action thriller film, The Gray Man, which reunites them with Captain America actor, Chris Evans. Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Wagner Moura, and Regé-Jean Page are also starring in the upcoming Netflix film. It's currently in post-production, but no release date has been announced yet. They're also revisiting their TV roots by directing the spy drama, Citadel, for Amazon Studios, which is scheduled to stream in February 2022. Granted that there might be other endeavors that they have yet to announce, it might not be that big of a problem in terms of scheduling. The MCU has a confirmed slate for at least until 2023, so the Russos have plenty of time to between now and then.

It makes a lot of sense that Marvel Studios wants to bring back the Russos into the MCU after what they've achieved in Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — if reports are indeed true. The question is, what project might they be looking at to collaborate again? Previously, the filmmakers revealed that they were interested in adapting Secret Wars on the screen. Now that the MCU is doing a Secret Invasion Disney+ series, perhaps they might actually get what they've been wanting.
