Being set in a 1950s travelling carnival means that American Horror Story: Freak Show has plenty of opportunities to diversify its cast with a mix of familiar faces and newcomers with unusual appearances, from Jyoti Amge, the world’s smallest woman, to 6’8″ model Erika Ervin AKA Amazon Eve.

This season has been gradually picking up more cast members along the way, including returning stars like Emma Roberts and Angela Bassett (who play a phony fortune teller and a three-breasted woman, respectively) and the most recent episode introduced Wes Bentley as the two-faced undead freak Edward Mordrake. Now two more names have been added to American Horror Story: Freak Show guest list, and they’re names that you’ll probably recognize.

According to a TVLine report, How I Met Your Mother actors Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka will guest star in the final episodes of American Horror Story: Freak Show, with Harris first appearing in the penultimate episode as a chameleon salesman and Burtka showing up in the finale as part of a “sexy storyline” with the freak show’s manager, Elsa Mars.

Harris and Burtka are recent newlyweds in real life and have regularly appeared on screen and on stage together in the past. Harris previously worked with Murphy when he guest-starred in an episode of high school musical drama Glee. More recently he played a supporting role in David Fincher’s missing person thriller Gone Girl, so perhaps its fitting that he should move on to even more dark material.

According to TVLine‘s report, Murphy invited Harris onto the show back in August and created his character based on ideas that the two of them both came up with: “He had very specific ideas for what he wanted to do, and I had very specific ideas, so we’re working on melding those.” Of course, given the show’s premise its unclear whether Harris’ role as a “chameleon salesman” means that he’s a salesman who sells chameleons or a regular salesman with color-changing skin.

Earlier this month Harris was tapped to host the 2015 Oscars (where Gone Girl has a strong chance of being a contender), and he recently landed a deal to host a primetime variety show on NBC. Suffice it to say, it’s good to be NPH.

American Horror Story: Freak Show continues tonight with ‘Edward Mordrake: Part 2′ @10pm on FX.
