Amazon has given an early renewal for season 2 of their upcoming Lord of the Rings series. With the announcement of another adaptation of the insanely popular trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien earlier this year, there are set to be big differences between the film trilogy and this new serialized TV series from Amazon. For instance, the movies covered major plot points and big characters, but there were definitely some things that it left out. The series is set to cover a lot of those subplots and characters that director Peter Jackson left out of the films he brought to life well over a decade ago.

Another piece of important information about the series that fans already know is that Amazon's Lord of the Rings series is going to be set before The Fellowship of the Ring, in regards to how things will play out in terms of the timeline. That little tidbit could be considered very exciting for fans of the trilogy as the original press release that Amazon sent out described their new series as “previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings." This means it's something completely new and fresh on screen and simply not an adaptation of Jackson's film work.

According to Variety, Amazon has already given an early renewal for season 2 of their highly anticipated Lord of the Rings series. Even though it's still only in the pre-production stage of the first season and without a full cast, it seems they are expecting great things. The Amazon series is being developed by writing team JD Payne and Patrick McKay, who previously worked on Star Trek 4 for producer J.J. Abrams. Several actors have been announced so far though, including Will Poulter (The Maze Runner), Markella Kavenagh as the character Tyra, and Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones).

Beyond a few names of the cast, we also know that Bryan Cogman, a producer from Game of Thrones, has signed on as a consulting producer for the project, and Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona is set to direct multiple episodes. With filming set to take place in New Zealand, there are already talks that Amazon's Lord of the Rings is set to be one of the most expensive TV shows of all time. With an impressive creative team behind the show, as well as professionals like Tom Shippey, a world-renowned expert on the works of Tolkien and John Howe, a conceptual designer from both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, it's looking to be quite an impressive team of people bringing this Tolkien story to life.

It's been previously reported that the Tolkien estate has set out a number of guidelines establishing exactly what lore can be changed and what they do not have permission to fuss with creatively, so it will be interesting to see how Amazon's new Lord of the Rings story taking place in the Second Age will play out. With word that the first season should be around 20 episodes long and now with the announcement of a season 2 renewal before the first even debuts, it seems like this new Lord of the Rings show is going to be full of exciting sets, rich characters and a new whole world that fans will most likely eat right up.
