Last year an Internet user known as El Nomeo leaked version 3.70 of Sony’s Playstation3 SDK online. Yesterday the man appeared in a UK court and pleaded guilty to charges of copyright infringement. He’ll be sentenced next month.

“I’ve always wanted to give something back to the community and here it is,” declared El Nomeo in January 2012 after leaking Sony’s PhyreEngine online.

“SDK 3.70 will be uploaded soon, having troubles with my connection!”

SDK stands for software development kit and describe tools used to create applications on a particular platform, in this case Sony’s Playstation3 gaming console.

The leak of their SDK wasn’t appreciated by Sony who launched an investigation. It lead to Jonathan Waring, a student at Teesside University in the UK.

Waring was arrested and immediately confessed but said that he didn’t expect any damages to have been caused to the games giant by the leak of the “research tool.”

The student had obtained a copy of the SDK from his university which had a licensed copy of the software. By sharing the content outside the university, Waring breached both the license and the law.

Yesterday the 23-year-old appeared at Durham Crown Court and pleaded guilty to infringing Sony’s copyrights. He will return to court for sentencing in June.
