iflix, the world’s leading subscription video on demand (SVoD) service for emerging markets, has entered the Ghanaian market with the introduction of a new platform to help market local content.

The platform serves as a digital hosting and distribution channel for Western and Asian dramas obtained through partnerships with over 150 studios and content distributors globally, including Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount, NBC Universal, Fox, CBS, BBC, Sony Pictures and Discovery.

The Country Manager of iflix Ghana, Mr Abner Briandt, said at the launch of the application on Thursday, September 7, in Accra that; “From today, consumers could sign up for a one-month free trial through iflix’s platform or by downloading the app to their phone or tablet from the Google Play or Apple App Store. It will give them unlimited access to thousands of the world’s best television shows, movies and more,” he said.

He explained that as the fastest- growing mobile market on earth, Africa was without question one of the world’s most dynamic regions with an astronomical growth in population driven by a strong youth ratio.

Given that in 2020, Africa will have 720 million smartphone users, Mr Briandt said iflix Ghana was taking steps to meet the entertainment needs of those growingly connected viewers.

“There is something overwhelmingly exciting about operating in an emerging market such as Ghana, where innovation can leapfrog decades of development,” he added.

Addressing the needs of customers

Mr Briandt stated that in two years, iflix has established itself as the only international SVoD service with full-scale localised operations in each of its territories and a total global headcount of 700 staff across 24 offices worldwide and over five million users.

“We have created our service in Ghana specifically for a Ghanaian audience. From content to marketing, our customers are at the core of everything we do and we cater to each individual needs,” he added.

He stated that; “iflix has a team of dedicated local experts who are committed to offering the Ghanaian market an exceptional, personalised entertainment experience. Our acquisition team ensure we have the world’s best international content, paired with a strong localised offering.”

Fighting piracy

He noted that iflix Ghana was ready to invest heavily in the movie industry in order to help fight piracy “which is a canker threatening the survival of the movie industry worldwide.”
