Brand New is an odd genre to explain sometimes. I think of them as loud, noisy indie rock with lots of deviation. Like early Modest Mouse or Bright Eyes.
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (TDGARIM) is my favorite album by Brand New, and of all time, but Daisy is unbelievably overlooked. While TDGARIM was the embodiment of resignation and existential loneliness, Daisy is harrowing, unstable, and raw.
I don't think you can fully appreciate one without the other. The emotions are delivered in a much more straightforward manner (e.g. the splintered, repeated wailing: "IT FEELS LIKE I'M JUMPING TOWARDS A TRAIN" at the end of "Gasoline"), and a lot more is shown in the tone and dynamics of the instrumentation this time around than primarily in the lyrics. The distortion/feedback on the guitars are thick and heavy. The rhythms are off-kilter and erratic. The melodies aren't often complex or groundbreaking, but the energy and emotion behind them are. I can't write. So just get a strong drink, turn "You Stole" or "Noro" up as loud as you can, and drop your head in defeat.
