How to stop Windows 10 from Automatically Updating Your Computer
HOW CAN WE STOP WINDOWS 10 FROM AUTOMATICALLY UPDATING OUR COMPUTERS?
THAT’S THE QUESTION EVERYONE IS ASKING — SO, HERE’S HOW!
Windows 10 is here for over a year and people have already given their thoughts about it. Some like it, some don’t, and some are in-between. There are many features on the Windows 10 operating system, one of which is the auto update function.
Generally, people like to stay updated on everything they do. As one person says, an up to date device is a secure device. This was probably the reasoning when Microsoft decided to slide in the auto update feature for all Windows 10 users. The software checks for updates downloads them and installs them without any help from the user. The feature is convenient for all those who feel every new update brings something good with it, but for some it takes the time to adapt, and they are just not ready to follow Microsoft rules just yet.
Microsoft gave all professional users of the operating system, (Windows Professional, Enterprise or Education) removing updates is an option away. If you have the Microsoft Windows Home operating system, however, it’s a different story.
PUT DIFFERENT RESTART TIMES
One of the annoying things about updates is that they restart the computer at inopportune times. If this is the problem then good for you because Microsoft lets you schedule when you want the updates to be done. A simple warning shows up and gives you two options to either restart now or restart later at your preferred time. Rumors speculating, however, say that Microsoft might remove this feature, opt rather insert active hours, a period whereby your computer cannot be restarted.
METERING INTERNET CONNECTIONS
Another useful way is to use metered Internet connections. Windows 10 can not force auto-update if you go offline and when its limited data it also can’t force auto download updates. Ethernet connections can’t be simply metered through settings because Microsoft apparently thinks you can have unlimited internet connection via Ethernet. Over mobile data, cell networks are metered by default.
REMOVING AUTOMATIC DRIVER UPDATES
If you don’t succeed in making Windows not download updates, you can try disabling the feature that makes it possible to update the computer drives, and it’s very simple. A simple right-click on the Start button takes you to the Control Panel feature. In Control Panel, there is an option named System and after click on Advanced system settings which open the system properties window. From there click on the Hardware tab and there is an option at the end named Device Installation Settings. A pop up which needs administrative rights will ask a question, and you press no and save the changes.
That is all. It’s easy and doable.
