WE ARE used to them swooping children and cyclists here in Australia, but this magpie in the UK is making headlines for its curiously polite conversation with a passer-by.

In the video, the magpie can be seen hopping onto a ledge in a Yorkshire park and asking Lisa Brooks: “You alright, love?”

The magpie and the mother-of-two go back and forth a couple of times before the bird replies quite clearly, “I’m alright, I’m alright.”

Delighted with their unexpected encounter, the 43-year-old and her husband Mark can be heard laughing in the background.

Brooks uploaded the footage to Facebook on Saturday and it has since been viewed more than 1.5 million times.

“I found it absolutely hilarious. It must be a local - it has a proper Yorkshire accent,” the woman told The Sun in the UK.

“Other people started coming over and were just in shock.”

Many birds are able to mimic the sounds of human languages with some budgies able to remember nearly 2000 different words.
