US blocked the Russian-Chinese draft statement on the DPRK in the UN Security Council

The United States has blocked a Russian-Chinese draft statement in the UN Security Council in support of progress in resolving the situation with the DPRK, the spokesman for the Russian mission to the United Nations, Fyodor Strzhizhovsky, said. This was reported by Interfax.

"For the second time in a day, Western delegations - this time the US - have blocked an initiative aimed at the positive. This is a draft of the UN Security Council's statement to the press submitted by Russia and China in support of progress in resolving the situation on the Korean peninsula, prompted by recent breakthrough agreements to hold meetings of the leadership of the DPRK, the United States and the Republic of Korea (RKK) at the highest level, " Střížovsky.

He added that the US reaction raises "questions about Washington's true intentions in the context of the emerging warming in inter-Korean relations with regard to resolving the situation with the DPRK."

The draft statement takes one page, it expresses support for the idea of holding the first meeting between the US president and the leader of the DPRK, TASS reports referring to the text of the document. There is also a positive dynamics of the situation on the peninsula.

In early March, it became known that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un suggested that US President Donald Trump hold a meeting on the settlement of the situation on the Korean peninsula. The American president noted that it would either lead to "the greatest deal of the century" or end with nothing. The meeting should take place before May this year.

With the South Korean delegation, Kim Jong Un met on March 5. On the part of South Korea, the meeting was attended, in particular, by the President's Security Advisor, Chon Yi Yong, who after the talks said that the leader of the DPRK had conveyed the message to the US leadership.

Pyongyang continued to build up its nuclear missile program in 2017, as a result, by the end of the year, the DPRK had successfully tested ballistic missiles capable, according to North Korean statements, of hitting the entire territory of the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as a hydrogen bomb. In response, the UN Security Council imposed additional economic sanctions against the DPRK, including a ban on the export of North Korean coal, iron ore, lead and seafood, the import of petroleum products, the banning of new joint ventures with Pyongyang and increasing the use of North Korean labor. In addition, the United States has introduced its own personal sanctions against North Korean and foreign citizens related to the North Korean nuclear and missile programs, as well as against legal entities.
