UK Lotto ‘winner’ on fraud charges after claiming $4.5 million jackpot in 2009
A UK man is facing fraud charges nearly a decade after winning a £2.5 million ($4.5 million) lotto jackpot back in 2009.
The Telegraph reported that Edward Putnam, 53, is accused of using an allegedly fake ticket to claim the big windfall.
The alleged fraud occurred in 2009 when a claim was made for an outstanding lottery prize, and the prize was paid out by The National Lottery.
Police told the Telegraph an investigation began in 2015 “after evidence came to light that the claim was not genuine”.
The company that runs the lottery, Camelot, were fined $5.4 million in 2015 by the Gambling Commission for paying out the prize.
The Commission found there were ‘serious failures’ over the payout but they couldn't be certain ‘a fraud had taken place’.
The Telegraph reports that the winnings were paid out even though the ticket allegedly did not have a working barcode.
Mr Putman was arrested in 2015 but later released without charge.
After his arrest earlier this week, Mr Putman was released on bail and is due to appear in the St Albans Magistrates' Court on October 16.
