The EU’s diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini insisted on Wednesday that the current Iran nuclear deal is working. The agreement “needs to be preserved,” she said, after US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron called for a new agreement with Tehran. Mogherini, who has staunchly defended the deal, said in Brussels that it was “essential for European security” but appeared to leave the door open for some new arrangement, AFP reports. Britain, France and Germany have repeatedly tried to persuade Trump not to abandon the 2015 deal, which gave Iran sanctions relief and the guarantee of a civilian nuclear program in return for limiting enrichment that could produce weapons-grade fuel.
