Apparently, the company has to use hacking techniques in order to prevent netizens from downloading its stolen data from file-sharing services. Some media reports claim that Sony Pictures is using Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing platform that underpins Netflix, Amazon’s store and other streaming and retail brands and provides access to hundreds of machines in Asia, which Sony is using to bombard websites that share its stolen data.

In other words, the allegations are that Sony uses DDoS attacks that attempt to overload the websites of the target and prevent people from accessing it. Such attacks are usually used by hackers in order to sabotage company services. However, the reports are that they have also been used by movie studios, which tried to prevent people from downloading pirated versions of movies from various cyberlockers and file-sharing services.

However, it is unlikely that Amazon would let this activity continue. Such move would present a myriad of potential legal problems to Sony. During the recent hack, the company had confidential data leaked, including 5 of its movies, all usernames and passwords for its Twitter and Facebook accounts and even pay details for top executives and movie stars.

The initial hacker attack, which crippled the computers of the company across its American and international offices, was originally linked with North Korea due to the release of a movie The Interview, which depicts an assassination attempt on Kim Jong-un. However, the FBI stated that North Korea has nothing to do with the hack – instead, it turned out that the links were found leading to Bangkok, Thailand. In the meantime, North Korea called the hack a “righteous deed”.
