THE Food Standards Agency has announced that Ewing Seafoods is recalling its Organic Smoked Salmon because it contains the potentially deadly listeria bug.

The company supplies smoked salmon to stores across Northern Ireland, including Sainsbury's.

Customers should look out for 100g and 200g packs of Ewings Organic Smoked Salmon.

Affected products have only been sold in Northern Ireland.

The batch number is 11823.

No other Ewing Seafoods products are known to be affected.

Point of sale notices will be displayed in any stores where the salmon has been sold, explaining why the products are being recalled and what consumers should do if they think they have bought a pack.

What is listeria?
Ewing Seafoods' smoked salmon has been pulled from shelves due to the presence of listeria monocytogenes.

Generally, listeria causes symptoms similar to flu, including high temperatures, muscle aches or pains, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

What to do if you think you've purchased a pack
The Food Standards Authority is cautioning people who think they may have bought an affected pack to avoid eating the product.

A statement on its website reads: "If you have bought any of the above products do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund."

The Sun has contacted Ewing Seafoods for a list of retailers selling the product.
