Scott Morrison 'open' to Royal Commission into power companies
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he is “open” to a Royal Commission into the power companies.
Mr Morrison agreed with new Energy Minister Angus Taylor that the energy companies were “as bad as the big banks” and he put them on notice.
“If I feel they’re not responding I’m prepared to take whatever action is necessary,” Mr Morrison told Melbourne radio.
Mr Morrison said the government had a “big stick” and would go further to force the companies to bring down prices.
It comes after Mr Morrison said he was not a “climate warrior” and wanted “fair dinkum power”, but that dumping the Paris Agreement to reduce emissions wouldn't have any impact on prices.
Mr Morrison agreed with former prime minister, John Howard, who argues withdrawing from the treaty won’t make any difference.
“I’m not convinced that changing it makes any difference one way or another. That’s the bottom line,” Mr Morrison said.
Appearing on Sydney radio’s 2GB with Alan Jones, the Prime Minister said the “discussion isn’t going to change anybody’s electricity prices".
“I don’t care about ideological debates. I care about getting people’s electricity prices down.
“My measure is not to get any sort of cheer squad jumping up and down for me when it comes to Paris, one way or another.
“I’m looking for the cheer squad of Mums and Dads and pensioners and others seeing their prices go down. That’s my focus.”
Mr Morrison said coal, and coal-fired power stations, were “in the mix” to increase “dispatchable power”.
When Jones told the PM to stop using the term, because people don’t understand it, the Prime Minister immediately changed rhetoric.
“Real power. Okay?” Mr Morrison said.
“Fair dinkum power. Reliable, that keeps the lights on. All of that.”
Mr Morrison said the government wouldn’t back away from legislating to force power companies that don’t “do thing right thing”, to divest assets.
