RICHARD Hammond’s £2 million ($3.7 million) Fort Knox country castle has been “burgled” sparking fears for the star’s safety as he recovers from his second accident.

The Grand Tour presenter, 48, has been recuperating at the eight-hectare estate, in Hertfordshire in south east England, after he cheated death for the second time in June 2017.

Police are now investigating the alleged midnight raid which left locals shocked as the property “is not easy to get into”.

The castle boasts protective ramparts, three-metre iron gates and a hi-tech security system.

A neighbour told The Mirror, “If he was burgled they must have used a helicopter to get in and out — as he does. It would have to be a James Bond-style break-in as the place is not easy to get into.”

Another local suggested the burglars would have needed to enter and flee the premises with a helicopter. Hammond lives with wife Mindy, 47, and teenage daughters Willow and Isabella.

News of the alleged break-in comes amid rumours that Amazon chiefs may not offer him, Jeremy Clarkson and James May another series of The Grand Tour.

The rumours, originally published in the Mail on Sunday — and followed up by other publications including The Sun — quoted a source as saying, “There is nothing to suggest they are going to do another [series of The Grand Tour].”

West Mercia Police said, “We received reports that a burglary may have been in progress and officers attended. An investigation is ongoing.”
