NEW YORK, March 3. / TASS /. A statement by US President Donald Trump about the introduction next week of import duties on steel and aluminum took the White House and the administration by surprise. This decision was impulsive, the head of state took it under the influence of emotions that had nothing to do with foreign trade, NBC television reported on Friday.

According to her sources, Trump made a statement in his heart, succumbing to a fit of anger. It was caused by domestic policy issues, but not by problems in foreign trade.

According to the television channel, Trump was extremely concerned and angry with the investigation of Moscow's alleged interference in the elections in the US in 2016, the conflict position of Justice Minister Jeff Sessions and press attacks on his senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Because of this, the head of state "turned out of the process" to agree on a common position of the administration on the issue of duties and did not get acquainted with the opinion of all his advisers and assistants.

As a result, Trump acted as he was advised by the Minister of Trade Wilbur Ross and the head of the National Trade Council Peter Navarro, but contrary to the arguments of Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin and the director of the National Economic Council under the White House, Gary Cohn, the broadcaster clarified.

The US president said on Thursday that his country next week will impose import duties on steel and aluminum. According to Trump, the amount of duties will be 25% for steel and 10% for aluminum for all countries supplying this product to the United States. The President announced the impending introduction of duties at a meeting with the leaders of the US steel and aluminum industry. During the meeting, Trump promised to revive these industries of American industry.

The head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has already protested the US plans to impose duties on imports of steel and aluminum. The politician promised to take European countermeasures against the United States in accordance with the rules of the World Trade Organization. The German government also opposed the US plans, noting that trade restrictions will significantly affect German exporters.
