Merkel and Macron called for pressure on Assad for the sake of implementing the UN resolution

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as French President Emmanuelle Macron, during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Moscow to pressure Bashar Assad to implement the UN Security Council resolution on a truce in Syria. This was stated on Sunday by the official representative of the Cabinet of Germany Steffen Seibert.

"Chancellor Merkel and President Makron stressed that the quick and full compliance with the resolution is now decisive: they urged Russia in this regard to exert maximum pressure on the Syrian regime in order to achieve an immediate cessation of air strikes and military operations," Seibert said.

As Seibert noted, Berlin and Paris expressed the hope that the truce would build a foundation through which progress could be made to find a political solution within the framework of the Geneva process. "Germany and France, as before, wish to cooperate with Russia and other international partners for this purpose," he said.

In turn, Russia expects that the foreign patrons of the anti-government forces in Syria will ensure compliance with the ceasefire. This was stated on Sunday in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in connection with the adoption on 24 February of the UN Security Council of resolution 2401 on the truce in Syria.

"We expect that the foreign patrons of anti-government armed groups will finally fulfill their part of the" homework "and ensure that their wards stop fighting in the interests of speedy and safe passage of humanitarian convoys," the ministry said.

The UN Security Council on Saturday adopted resolution 2401 with a demand to cease hostilities throughout Syria for at least 30 days to provide humanitarian assistance to the population. According to the idea of ​​the co-authors of the document - Kuwait and Sweden - this will improve the situation in the suburb of Damascus, East Guta, controlled by militants and under siege by government forces.
