A review is being carried out of primary school textbooks in Kenya after public criticism that some of the content is unsuitable for children, an education official has told the BBC.

One of the books appeared to celebrate the lavish lifestyle of a fictional politician who had his own helicopter and fleet of cars.

Another English comprehension text featured women carrying heavy loads to market as men drank beer and roasted meat.

Kenyan news sites have been tweeting that the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, which published the textbooks, has withdrawn them.

However, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development director Julius Jwan denied that it had withdrawn the books.

He told the BBC that all textbooks would be re-checked and any that did not meet the required standard would be withdrawn.

The institute is in charge of the curriculum and vets all textbooks.
