Google and Facebook Fined for Degrading Photos in Brazil
Brazilian court has handed down a $15,000 fine to a couple of the international tech giants for their failure to remove or block “morbid images”.
A judge delivered a ruling after the images of Brazilian musician Cristiano Araujo in a mortuary emerged online in the social networks, but both Google and Facebook failed to react to the court request to remove them. The Brazilian singer, 29, died in a car crash alongside his girlfriend last month.
As a result, a few days ago, the Brazilian court declared that the US companies had acted in “bad faith” when ignored an earlier ruling to remove pictures. Google and Facebook ended up with being fined 50,000 Brazilian real (about $15,000) each.
In an earlier ruling, issued two weeks ago, the judge said that the posting of gruesome pictures of the singer’s death was “extremely disrespectful to the family’s feeling of sorrow”.
