WILDLIFE experts have revealed bizarre images of a TWO HEADED snake found slithering through a terrified US homeowner's back garden.

The "extremely rare" serpent was spotted outside a house in Woodbridge, Virginia, according to shocked workers from Wildlife Management and Control (WMC).

They shared footage of the freakish copperhead snake twisting and wriggling inside a container after it had been caught.

While some social media users at first questioned the authenticity of the post, WMC said the photos and video were both very real, according to The Charlottesville Observer.

“Absolutely not a fake! We assure you it’s very real and was shedding its skin,” the organisation told reporters from the newspaper.

Two-headed snakes are rare and typically do not survive for long in the wild as the rare genetic abnormality can hinder the snake’s ability to catch prey.

“Snakes operate a good deal by smell, and if one head catches the scent of prey on the other's head, it will attack and try to swallow the second head,” one expert revealed.

State biologists also revealed both mouths can distribute their nasty venom to their victims.

Not surprisingly, many people admitted they found the sight of the snake absolutely petrifying.

“This is what nightmares are made of,” said Dorothy McColl Holmberg, summing up what many were posting after the animal was proven to be legit.

The snake was turned over to the Wildlife Centre of Virginia in Waynesboro, located more than 120 miles from where it was found.

In a press release, it revealed the left head appears to be more dominant than the right.
