Doctor who asked patient 'are you dead?' suspended after viral video
A doctor in California has been suspended after a video of her asking a patient if he “was dead” went viral.
Donald Bardwell shared a video on Facebook of his son, Samuel, 20 at the Los Gatos hospital in Northern California. It has been viewed more than five million times.
“This is how they treat black people in Los Gatos emergency room,” Bardwell said in the footage.
Mr Bardwell’s son had collapsed during basketball practice, and said he was having an anxiety attack - something he reportedly suffers from and had been on medication for.
He said to Dr Beth Keegstra he couldn’t breathe in, to which she responded: “He can't inhale. Wow! He must be dead. Are you dead, sir. I don't understand. You are breathing just fine.”
The doctor disputed he was having trouble breathing, saying: “He has an oxygen saturation that is 100 percent. He is breathing perfectly normally. This is not laboured breathing”.
“I'm sorry, sir, you were the least sick of all of the people who are here who are dying.
“There, so you picked your head up. Now don't try to tell me you can't move.”
She went on to ask the patient if he was wanting “narcotics” and accused him of changing his story, before storming off.
Mr Badwell reportedly said his son had been sick and drifted in and out of consciousness before he took him to hospital.
Mr Bardwell told SFGate his son had not taken his anxiety medication as he hadn’t been able to pick it up from the pharmacy. He said he didn’t think the doctor should be practicing.
The patient told his dad to start filming after the doctor spoke to a security guard about him, ABC reports.
The Washington Post reported the drug, Klonopin can have withdrawal symptoms including anxiety and shaking.
El Camino Hospital chief executive Dan Woods said the doctor has been suspended “pending further investigation”.
