Christmas has come early for Rockingham dad Matty Bertram, the new owner of a 10.5m boat after handing over a six pack of beer.

Matty says within two minutes of the boat popping up - advertised for free on Facebook page, Perth Beer Economy - he was in touch with the owner.

Licensing papers were signed the next day.

The only catch, there’s no engine.

“What do they say in the real estate game, it’s a fixer upper? Yeah definitely but worth it I think in the end,” he said.

Matty isn’t an experienced boatie but he says he will put his skills as a panel beater and spray painter to good use “and see how I go”.

He expects to outlay $5000 on a new engine. The boat’s restoration and fit out will become his long term project.

“We were looking at getting a beach shack and it ended up being like $2500 in fees for the year so it worked out cheaper to have this on a mooring,” Matty said.

A mooring was something he also scored through a deal on Facebook.

He’s now living the champagne life on a beer budget.
