A BRIT thrillseeker was killed after smashing into the side of a mountain while base jumping in the Swiss Alps.

The 44-year-old man, who has not been named, was with pals who watched helplessly as he crashed into rocks near Lauterbrunnen, 40 miles from the capital, Bern.

He is the second Brit to die base jumping in the area after a 38-year-old was killed last month.

Locals said he deployed his parachute but then the jump went wrong.

Berne police said in a statement: "Abase jumper has died in an accident at Lauterbrunnen.

"He was a British citizen aged 44 and he was found dead by rescue teams.

"He was with other base jumpers when the accident happened and the exact cause is yet to be determined but it appears he hit the rock face.

"He came to rest on a ledge and he died as a result of his injuries.

"A rescue helicopter was snet to the scene but there was nothing that could be done.

"An investigation into the circumstances has been launched."
