Bad phone habits have teens seeking treatment for neck injuries
A GROWING number of WA teenagers are requiring medical attention for injuries suffered from spending too much time on their smart phones.
The condition – known as ‘text neck’ – accounts for a range of symptoms related to having your head down for a long period of time using a mobile device.
Those affected will most commonly experience stiffness in their neck, pain around their neck, shoulders and arms, muscular weakness and headaches.
Perth physiotherapist Felicity Kermode said she was seeing new patients all the time and many were battling with the demands of day-to-day life.
“In extreme cases, the pain could prevent them from participating in sport or even getting through a full day at school,” Ms Kermode said.
There is four to five kilos of pressure on the neck when the head is upright.
A figure that increases to 18kg with the head tilted forward 30 degrees, and 27kg at 60 degrees.
Treatment can last several months and involve the Iron Neck – a pulley-based tool placed on the head for added resistance during rehabilitation training, and used to help whiplash sufferers regain strength in their neck.
Year 12 student Olivia Stewart is one of many young people in Perth seeing a physio to cure “a bit of a sore neck, headaches and upper back pain”, the result of craning over her phone for too long.
Ms Kermode said the condition could be avoided with regular movement and limited use of mobile devices.
