Jason Roy has been called up to England's squad as part of a 13-man squad for the one-off Test against Ireland next week at Lord's.The Surrey opener's good form as a key part of Eoin Morgan's World Cup winning team has put him in the frame for a Test debut in the four-day game which begins next Wednesday (July 24).

Chief selector, Ed Smith, has shown before that he is willing to pick players for the Test team based on their white-ball exploits and he has done the same again with Roy as England attempt to address their longstanding top order woes.Although Roy has mainly batted for Surrey in the middle order in Championship cricket of late, he is set to bat in the top three against Ireland.

He is likely to open the batting, as he does in limited overs cricket, with his county teammate Rory Burns with Kent's Joe Denly at number three although Denly is also an option to open, as he did on his Test debut in West Indies earlier this year. That would leave Roy at first drop and captain Joe Root in his favoured position at four.Somerset fast-bowler Lewis Gregory has also been called up for the first time while uncapped Warwickshire quick Olly Stone is included although he has been part of the Test squad previously.

James Anderson, who is recovering from a calf injury, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes have all been selected as has Sam Curran who took six wickets against Australia 'A' for the Lions at Canterbury on Monday. England have decided to rest World Cup winners Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler from the game against Ireland while Mark Wood and Jofra Archer were not considered for selection. Wood has a left side strain he sustained in the final against New Zealand and will be out for four to six weeks.

Archer has been given a period of rest and will head to Barbados for a short break.Roy, who averages 38 in first-class cricket, last played a red-ball game for the England Lions against Pakistan 'A' during the winter. His selection for that match was the first sign that England were considering him as a Test match option and unless something dramatic happens, Roy will be included in England's side for the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston on August 1.The 28 year-old averaged 63 during the World Cup which included a big hundred against Bangladesh. He suffered a hamstring injury against West Indies which caused him to miss the matches against Sri Lanka and Australia which England lost.

He returned to the side for the must-win game against India and scored a barnstorming 66 which he followed up with two more half-centuries against New Zealand in the group stages and Australia in the semi-final.Gregory has been a consistent performer for Somerset. The 27-year-old has been in fine form this campaign taking 44 wickets at an average of 13.88 and he is currently captaining the England Lions against Australia XI in a tour match at Canterbury.

His county teammate, Jack Leach, is also included as the second spinner behind Moeen Ali.A 16-man squad will attend a pre-Ashes training camp this weekend at St George's Park, the Football Association's national football centre based at Burton-Upon-Trent
