West Coast Fever’s Olivia Lewis is well aware there are plenty of people who don’t know who she is — and she thinks that might just be a good thing.

One of two new faces at Fever for next season, Lewis has largely flown under the radar after graduating from training partner to earning a two-year Super Netball contract.

Fellow recruit Alice Teague-Neeld received a lot more attention after she was announced as Nat Medhurst’s replacement on the same day back in September.

“It was just funny that they announced them at the same time and I knew that was always going to be a big talking point so it was fine,” Lewis said.

“Not many people probably know who I am, which I guess is a good thing. It gives me a chance to prove myself and put my name out there, so I’m excited for that opportunity.”

Lewis replaced towering Annika Lee-Jones, who was given a lifeline by reigning premiers Sunshine Coast Lightning after struggling for court time in two years at Fever.

But Lewis is hopeful Fever fans will see more of her, despite the fact she will battle with dynamic defensive duo Courtney Bruce and Stacey Francis for opportunities.

At 185cm, Lewis gives away height to the taller shooters but boasts an impressive vertical leap and powerful closing speed.

The 19-year-old from Rockingham admits goalkeeper is her stronger position for now, but knows she must build her craft at goal defence.

“I know that Stacey and Courtney are amazing players,” Lewis said. “I’d like to challenge them a bit I guess and learn as much off them as I can.

“Hopefully I will be able to swing into GK and GD. I’ll just take every opportunity I can.”

It has been a big year for Lewis. She was MVP for the Western Sting, the WA team that plays in the Australian Netball League, and starred in the State League premiership with the Coastal Sharks before claiming the Jill McIntosh Medal.

She started to dare to dream of a Fever contract during the season in her second year as a training partner and is now eight weeks into her first full pre-season.

Lewis is determined to help Fever go one better after their runner-up finish last season.

“I felt like I was along with them quite a lot this last year and felt the loss a bit as well,” Lewis said.

“I see us doing really really well and definitely giving it a good crack.”
