DOWN 3-1 in the series, India captain Virat Kohli says the biggest difference between his side and England is the bravery Joe Root’s men have shown in tough situations.

India lost by 60 runs in the fourth Test in Southampton on Sunday, ending its hopes of a series win with one match to go.

It was a match the tourists were seemingly in control of at multiple stages. In the first innings they reduced England to 6-86 before a half-century from No.8 Sam Curran (78) took the hosts to a total of 246. In the second Curran scored 46 to set India the sizeable target of 245 to win.

Curran proved similarly game-changing in the first Test when he dragged England from 7-87 in its second innings to 180 all-out, setting India a target of 194 to win — 32 runs too many for the away team.

The 20-year-old is a large part of why England’s lower-order (No.8-11) has out-batted India’s (411 runs at 21.63 to 210 at 9.13) this series, and Kohli singled him out for praise after the match.

“They have guys who are fearless down the order, they back their skills, they were braver in tough situations than us, they were more confident about what they wanted to do in tough situations, and that’s why they won this Test match,” Kohli said.

“Those contributions lower down the order have been significant as far as this Test goes and the one Birmingham as well. I would like to congratulate Sam Curran. He has been a nice find for England.”

Kohli, who leads the series’ run-scoring charts (544 at 68.00) by 284 runs, said the campaign has taught his side a valuable lesson.

“When you come so close, there is an art of crossing the line as well, which we will have to learn.

“We have the ability and that is why we are getting close to a result, and we have belief in that ability. But when a pressure situation comes, how we react to it is something we have to work on a bit, something everyone is ready to work on that.”

He is confident the team will not fold in the dead-rubber fifth Test.

“We still have one opportunity to improve our mistakes and to learn to capitalise during pressure situations.”
