Vegas took an Astro-nomical loss because of the World Series.

In fact, Nevada's state-regulated sportsbooks suffered their largest single-month loss on baseball, $11.4 million, with Houston's historic seven-game victory over the Dodgers, nearly doubling the previous record loss on MLB, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (via ESPN.com).

The books' previous largest loss on baseball was $6.2 million in November 1999, after the Yankees beat the Braves in the World Series.

Here's how things went against Vegas this year: The Astros beat the Dodgers, 5-1, in Game 7 on Nov. 1, sending single-game bettors to the cashier. Also, futures wagers placed throughout the year on the Astros to win the World Series cashed in as well (Houston, which had never won a title, opened the season at 15-to-1 odds to win the Series).

Despite the record loss on MLB, Nevada books finished $9.8 million to the good in November, primarily because of big wins in football and basketball, ESPN.com noted, the 52nd consecutive month, dating to July 2013, that the sportsbooks have come out ahead of the gamblers
