Brookline will host the US Open for the first time in 34 years when the tournament returns to the Country Club in 2022.

The United States Golf Association has also announced the Los Angeles Country Club will host its first US Open in 2023 and Pinehurst will hold the event for the fourth time in 2024.

Brookline has also hosted the event three times before but is perhaps best remembered for the 1999 Ryder Cup, which became known as the 'Battle of Brookline' after the United States fought back from 10-6 down to regain the trophy.

The Massachusetts course last hosted the US Open in 1988 when Curtis Strange beat Sir Nick Faldo in a play-off to claim the first of back-to-back championships.

"The Country Club has a long-standing, valued partnership with the United States Golf Association, so our membership is very excited and proud to have been chosen as the host site of the 2022 US Open," said Will Fulton, the Country Club's general chairman for the 2022 US Open .

"We have been fortunate to have held 16 USGA events and to have witnessed some of golf's great moments. Along with our gracious co-hosts, the town of Brookline, we look forward to welcoming golf fans from New England and around the world."

The North Course at Los Angeles Country Club, which will also hold the Walker Cup in 2017, will host its first US Open in 2023 and will see California have the tournament for the third time in five years.

"The city loves to host major events," said club president John Chulick. "This region, not having hosted the US Open for 75 years, will be ecstatic about this."

Pinehurst was handed the tournament for the first time in 1999 and most recently played host in 2014 as Martin Kaymer won by eight shots round Course No 2.

"It is an honour and a privilege to be named as the site for the 2024 US Open," said Pinehurst Resort & Country Club president Tom Pashley.

"We take great pride in our relationship with the USGA and feel fortunate they have chosen to bring the national championship back to Pinehurst for the fourth time in just 25 years."

The US Open was held at Chambers Bay last month, where Jordan Spieth claimed victory, and Oakmont will host its eighth championship next year.

The 2022 US Open will take place on June 16-19, with the 2023 edition on June 15-18 and the 2024 event played from June 13-16.
