Supercars appoint controversial choice Adrian Burgess as new technical director
SUPERCARS has named Adrian Burgess as its new Head of Motorsport as the championship continues to investigate hybrid power trains.
The role will see Burgess, currently the TEKNO Group principal, taking over from the departing David Stuart, who is leaving the current Technical and Sporting Director role for a post at CAMS.
Burgess arrives in the role after 12 seasons in the championship in various roles with TEKNO, Walkinshaw Racing, winning the 2010 title with James Courtney and Dick Johnson Racing and multiple titles with Triple Eight and Jamie Whincup.
The Englishman arrived in Australia off the back of a distinguished career in Formula 1, most notably with McLaren where he worked with drivers the caliber of Ayrton Senna.
With Stuart to stay on in his role to oversee the homologation of the new Ford Mustang, a start date has yet to be nominated for Burgess.
“We received expressions of interest and applications from a number of extremely experienced people from a variety of major international categories,” Supercars CEO Sean Seamer said.
“The calibre of candidates illustrates the regard in which our category is held worldwide.
“Adrian has that level of experience but also a deep knowledge of our sport technically and operationally. He will transition into this role seamlessly to lead the motorsport group.”
In his new role Burgess will work under the direction of the Supercars Commission, Seamer and Chief Operating Officer Shane Howard, his remit to oversee the future technical and sporting direction of the sport.
The Commission is in the preliminary stages of exploring hybridisation, power trains and defining the next generation Supercar from 2021.
