Somerset to not appeal against points deduction penalty

The Somerset Cricket County Club has decided against appealing the "points deduction" decision of the Cricket Discipline Commission panel over the condition of the Taunton pitch for the deciding clash of the County Championship, the announced on Friday (December 13).
The decision was taken 'after conducting an exhaustive review of the relevant appeal procedures', the club stated in a release.
Following the title-deciding clash between Somerset and Essex, the former was docked 24 points for the next season after the pitch was rated 'poor' due to 'excessive unevenness of bounce'. While Somerset accepted the charge that the pitch was poor, they wanted to contest the charge that the 'surface was not the best that the club were able to produce for the match'.
After deciding to not appeal against the charge, the County stated, "This conclusion has been reached because it is clear that, in order to overturn the decision, the club would have to demonstrate conclusively to the panel who originally implemented the sanctions that they had come to the wrong decision.
"Such a heavy burden of proof is extremely difficult for any appellant to discharge."
They further added, "The club are very disappointed with the panel's decision but has concluded that it is in the best interest of all parties to move forward.
"We can now focus on preparing the team and the venue for the demands of the season ahead, with a specific focus on performing successfully, with a highly talented and competitive group of players and a clear focus on developing broader strategies to support this objective through our teams off the field.
"The club notes the strong message the panel ruling sends to all first class counties."
