SLUGGER Chris Lynn and bowler Andrew Tye have been the best performed Australians in the Indian Premier League this season but only one will be wearing green and gold for their country next month.

Tye, who is part of the Aussie attack for the one-day series in England, is the leading wicket-taker in the competition after the conclusion of the regular season taking 24 wickets for Kings XI Punjab, well and truly earning his monster $1.4 million deal.

But leaving out internationally retired Twenty20 specialist Shane Watson, Lynn has been the lone Aussie batsman to make any impact despite the injury issues which national selectors remain wary of.

The Queenslander has racked up 425 runs, 12th on the overall list, but a shoulder issue is seen as too limiting for him to turn out in the Australian one-day or T20-squads going to England.

Even Watson, with 438 runs, which puts him in the top 10 IPL scorers this season, has outshone Australia’s top order batsmen including Glenn Maxwell (169 runs), one-day vice-captain Aaron Finch (134) and Big Bash revelation D’Arcy Short (115).

But Aussie legend Ricky Ponting, Maxwell’s coach at the Delhi Daredevils, dismissed any concern over the form of the dynamic Victorian who was man of the series in an international T20 tri-series in February.

Ponting said Maxwell had suffered because the IPL’s leading run scorer, Rishabh Pant, was batting in his position.

“He missed the first game with Aaron Finch’s wedding, which meant that Rishabh batted at four and did well, so when Glenn came back in he was at number five and it’s a position he hasn’t played in all that much,” Ponting said.

“Having spoken to him a few times through the tournament he just said he felt frustrated he hadn’t been able to have an impact for his team.”

Delhi finished last and only Short, Lynn and Watson are in teams which have progressed to the IPL finals.

Most of the members of the Aussie white-ball squads are now heading to Brisbane for a meeting with new coach Justin Langer and a training a camp from late this week before they head to England for five ODIs and a lone T20 against the old enemy.

Langer used his official first day in charge to address state coaches at the annual conference in Brisbane.
