HANDS up if you know the lyrics to the second verse of ‘Advance Australia Fair’?

This writer can’t claim to and on Monday it caught Australia’s cricketers by surprise too.

As the music faded at the end of the first verse, the team began its customary applause only for the singer — after a pregnant pause — to begin the second.

A few of the Australians chuckled in surprise, while Andrew Tye fumbled his way through the first couple of lines before smiling and giving up.

You’d be harsh to hold it against the side considering how rarely the second verse is actually sung.

But don’t expect Alyssa Healy to take that for an excuse.

Below are the full lyrics to Australia’s national anthem just in case you need a reminder.

“Australians all let us rejoice,

For we are young and free;

We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;

Our home is girt by sea;

Our land abounds in nature’s gifts

Of beauty rich and rare;

In history’s page, let every stage

Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,

Advance Australia Fair.

“Beneath our radiant Southern Cross

We’ll toil with hearts and hands;

To make this Commonwealth of ours

Renowned of all the lands;

For those who’ve come across the seas

We’ve boundless plains to share;

With courage let us all combine

To Advance Australia Fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing,

Advance Australia Fair.
