Australia coach Matthew Mott says his team have some very fresh memories to motivate them and ensure complacency is avoided in Monday's second T20I against New Zealand.

The Aussies recovered from 4-45 to claim a six-wicket win in the opening game at North Sydney Oval on Saturday night, chasing the White Ferns' 5-162 thanks to a 119-run stand between skipper Meg Lanning and her deputy Rachael Haynes.

But it was only last year that Mott's troops found themselves in precisely the same situation against the Kiwis, before going on to surrender the series – one of the past three they've lost to their trans-Tasman rivals in recent times.

"They're a great T20 side and they've proven that in the last couple of years so there's certainly no overconfidence from our point of view – their recent record against us is very strong," Mott said ahead of today's clash at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

"We're also aware that we were one up last time we played them (in February 2017) and then let them back into the series and that's pretty close in our memories, so we certainly won't be taking game two lightly at all.

"That's something we talked about before the series, that every game we'll treat in isolation and make sure we put our best foot forward."

Uncapped Victoria quick Tayla Vlaeminck has again been ruled unavailable for Monday's match due to a quad strain, with state teammate and off-spinner Molly Strano drafted into the squad as cover.

It remains to be seen whether Strano will feature in Australia's XI, but the Victorian does have a strong record against the White Ferns, having claimed an Australian T20 record 5-10 against them in February 2017.

"We've still got Nicola Carey as a reserve quick, so we felt well covered that area," Mott explained.

"Tayla is not far away, she's just got to meet some benchmarks with her high-speed running before she'll be considered for selection, but she's certainly a player we're looking to hopefully play in game three (in Canberra).

"But we'll be very conservative with her with a huge couple of months coming up. As we saw from the Kiwis (on Saturday night), if you throw a bit of extra pace in the game it changes things up."

With just one day between matches, Mott said the Australians would quickly assess what did and didn't work on Saturday night as they look to seal the series with a game left to play.

"From a fielding and bowling perspective, I thought we were pretty good but there's some room for improvement to tidy up a bit of that back-end stuff when we let them get away a little bit.

"They batted quite well at the back end of the innings, but it was a good wicket, as we saw when we batted. We were definitely happy to keep them to 160 after sending them in.

"From a batting perspective, our intent was excellent. Something we've spoken about is to almost take the wickets out of the game plan a little bit and make sure the incoming batters take the pressure off the batters out there a bit.

"The Kiwis bowled extremely well early, especially Sophie Devine. That was a good test and the good thing was that partnership (between Lanning and Haynes) was two experienced heads in the middle weathering the storm and then prospering later in the innings once they'd got in.

"For us that win was a great test of our resilience and our game plan and it gives us a lot of confidence going into game two."

Mott also likes what he's seen so far from 19-year-old leg-spinner Georgia Wareham, who made her debut on Saturday.

The Victorian bowled just one over and finished with figures of 1-15, but the Australian coach believes the conditions at Allan Border Field could be much better suited to the wrist spinner.

"North Sydney Oval for a leg-spinner can be boom or bust, and the great thing was she created three opportunities in that over.

"She'll get more and more confident and she'll get a bit more out of a daytime venue at AB Field, so I'm looking forward to big things."

The second match of the Commonwealth Bank Women's T20 Series will kick off at Allan Border Field at 2.10pm AEST on Monday.

The match will be broadcast live on Channel Seven, Fox Cricket and cricket.com.au.
