Mitch Marsh was unhappy with the reaction of the MCG crowd when he was called up for the Boxing Day Test.

Marsh came into the side for hometown boy Peter Handscomb to give the side more bowling depth on what has proven to be a lifeless pitch so far.

However Marsh was mercilessly booed by the pro Handscomb crowd and Australian bowling coach David Saker admitted the younger Marsh brother didn’t take it well.

“It’s disappointing,” Saker told ABC Grandstand. “I know that Victorian cricket fans are passionate about Peter Handscomb, but Mitch came into the changerooms at lunch and said that’s not really how you want to get a reaction on Boxing Day.”

Sakers’ sentiments were echoed by Marsh’s teammate Travis Head, who was inimpressed by the crowd booing an Australian player.

“It was pretty poor for Mitch to cop that,” Head told reporters. “I don’t think it’s great.

“As he showed today, he’s a great team man. Great fella. He worked his backside off for the boys, did a wonderful job.

“It’s disappointing, hopefully that won’t be the case for the next couple of days.

“I don’t think any Australian cricketer in Australia deserves to get booed.”

Marsh finished with very respectable figures of 0-23 off 15 overs with three maidens on Boxing Day and relieved the pressure on the other three Australian pacemen.

Michael Hussey and Mark Waugh were also disappointed in the crowd, when they recalled the crowds boos on day two.

“That is not good enough for a home grown player to cop that from the crowd,” Hussey said.

“I can’t recall that ever having happened before,” Waugh added.
