Northampton have signed Bury defender Leon Barnett on a two-year contract, the club have announced.

The 31-year-old will officially move to Sixfields on a free transfer on July 1 following the termination of his contract with Bury.

The ex-Luton, West Brom, Norwich and Wigan defender joined the Shakers last summer and made 26 outings for the club as they finished 19th in Sky Bet League One.

With over 300 senior appearances under his belt, Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh is pleased to sign the centre-back following the departures of Zander Diamond, Gabriel Zakuani and Rod McDonald.

"Leon is a dominant, leader type centre-half who puts his body on the line," Edinburgh told the club's website.

"He has played a lot of his football in the top two tiers with a fair amount of success and he has a lot of quality.

"Leon has three promotions from the Championship to the Premier League on his CV and we believe the qualities he has will be a big help to the squad."
