Britain’s Laura Robson won her first singles match since September 2013 as she came through her opener at the low-profile Challenger Banque Nationale De Granby tournament in Canada.

The former world No 27, whose ranking has fallen to 913th after a near 18-month absence due to a wrist injury, beat Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka.

Robson won 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 against the 17-year-old, who is ranked 162nd in the world and was the second seed in the hard court tournament.

Robson, 21, who made her return to action during the grass-court season at Eastbourne and Wimbledon, is intending to build up match fitness and form during several North American events on the ITF Tour, a tier below the main WTA tournament level, in the coming weeks.

She then plans to play at the US Open, which runs from August 31 to September 13 at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Tournament organisers have announced on the US Open website that Robson is one of four players allocated places in the women's main draw of the grand slam due to a protected ranking, having been 58th in the world before injury forced her off the WTA Tour after the 2014 Australian Open.
