A Japanese kayaker is facing serious backlash for attempting to sabotage his rival.

Yasuhiro Suzuki has been banned from competition eight years for spiking the drink of Seiji Komatsu with an anabolic steroid and causing him to fail a drug test, the Japan Anti-Doping Agency announced Tuesday.

Suzuki drugged Komatsu at the national championships in September.

The Japan Canoe Federation began investigating the matter after Komatsu tested positive for drugs but denied consuming any. Suzuki later admitted to the wrongdoing.
