YOUNG speedway star Reid Mackay is fighting for his life after rolling his car multiple times in an accident that has shocked the speedway community.

Mackay, 25, lost control of his car at an estimate 150km/h, flying over the safety wall during a heat of the Sydney City Speed Car 50 lap classic at Parramatta Speedway. Emergency crews rushed to the crash site before he was taken to Westmead hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Fellow speedway driver Darren Jenkins praised the efforts of the crash crew.

“The crash crews got to him very quickly, we couldn’t have asked for any better care (from the crew),” said Jenkins.

The Mackay family is speedway royalty, with Reid’s grandfather Ronnie a fellow champion.

Spectator and father of a young speedway driver Scott Hourigan was in shock after witnessing the scary scene.

“I think the crowd was a bit shocked of how violent the roll and how quick it was,” Hourigan said.

“My son was in a crash in October so it’s a bit raw for me, so I feel for the family.

“The speedway family will get together and help them through it and help Reid as well.”
