THIS year’s AFL Draft is only 13 days away and Territory footballers aspiring to play in the national competition are hoping it is a lucky number.

The historic two-day draft at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, formerly known as Etihad Stadium, will feature the top 20 picks on Thursday, November 22 and the remaining rounds, including the rookie draft, on Friday the 23rd.

At least six Territorians are working to get their names on AFL lists by Friday afternoon.

Matt Green, Michael Mummery, Isaac White and Rodney Baird are realistic chances in both drafts.

Territory Thunder’s NEAFL pairing of Abe Ankers and Sam Smith are rookie draft hopefuls.

One big lifeline for both players is the concession picks given to the Gold Coast Suns and Carlton, giving them access to five mature age recruits from state leagues around the country.

The AFLNT’s talent and pathways manager Wally Gallio said the main action will start heating up next week when the November 22 date starts to get a bit closer.

“The clubs are talking to the players and their parents right now, so it’s been a bit of a quiet time,’’ Gallio said.

“Most of the boys are still training and playing, while Greeny is back home in Tennant Creek having a bit of a break.

“Sam is still playing at Districts and coming into the Michael Long Centre doing his fitness sessions, it’s a waiting game for him.’’

Gallio said the first 10 to 20 picks would be quality players quickly sorted with the clubs.

“But then there is going to be a blanket over the next 60 names, that’s the sort of draft it is this year,’’ he said.

“Rounds three, four, five, six and seven will be called on Friday, followed by the rookie draft in the afternoon.

“The concession picks for five extra mature aged over 21 gives Abe and Sam a chance.

“The form they’ve both shown and their testing results were pretty good.’’
