Falcons RB Devonta Freeman played through sprained knee during playoffs
Devonta Freeman played through a sprained posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee during both Falcons playoff games this year, the Atlanta running back told ESPN after the team was ousted from the postseason with a 15-10 loss at the Eagles on Saturday.
Freeman said he sustained the injury in the Falcons’ playoff berth-clinching Week 17 win over the Panthers, and he was listed on the injury report for both games in the postseason.
Freeman was held to seven rushing yards on 10 carries in the loss to Philadelphia, but he also had five catches for 26 yards and a touchdown. While he brought up the injury, he said he wasn’t using it as an excuse – and to that point, the Eagles defense was pretty much lights-out Saturday, giving up just 281 yards of offense. The Falcons’ only touchdown came on a short field gifted by a botched punt return.
"It was tough, but the game was on the line,'' Freeman said. "It was really more like a PCL, and I really started feeling stuff on my PCL. But that's no excuse. You know what I mean? You just have to play.''
He seemed fine in the Falcons’ 26-13 win at the Rams in the wild-card round, rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
Freeman’s not sure if he’ll have surgery on his knee this offseason.
