BERNARD Tomic has swept into the French Open’s main draw with an inspired victory over Portugal’s Goncalo Oliveira in the final round of qualifying.

Tomic advanced 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.

The Queenslander’s seventh victory in eight matches earned him promotion to a grand slam draw for the first time since the 2016 US Open.

Tomic will join compatriots Nick Kyrgios, John Millman, Jordan Thompson, Alex De Minaur and James Duckworth in the 128-player field.

Currently ranked 208, the former No 16 will be assigned a first-round opponent when qualifying is completed.

He could face either Kyrgios or Thompson.

Tomic dug in repeatedly against Oliveira to steal a crucial opening set in warm conditions. He trailed the tricky left hander 3-5 and then 2-5 in the tiebreak before Oliveira’s nerves frazzled with foot faults and double faults.

Tomic has played only a handful of tournaments since losing in Australian Open qualifying and briefly venturing into reality television.

He was watched courtside by his father and coach, evidence of the pair’s recent reconciliation after a brief estrangement.

Tomic was also supported by Serena Williams’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
