Socceroos legend John Aloisi has stepped down as Brisbane Roar head coach, leaving the Australian football community open-mouthed.

After the Roar’s horror start to the season, speculation was beginning to mount over Aloisi’s future at the club and the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Wellington Phoenix was the final nail in the coffin, with Aloisi pulling the pin on Friday morning.

The Australian football community has taken to Twitter since the resignation was announced.

Fox Sports football presenter Adam Peacock wrote: “That escalated. Big decision to be made to see where club heads next.”

Peacock’s Fox Sports colleague Daniel Garb was equally as shocked.

“Blimey. Something obviously not right there. A surprise as everything seemed right for a change pre-season,” he said.

Sydney Morning Herald sports reporter Vince Rugari said: “Jumped before he was pushed by the Bakries is my guess.”

While Chief football writer for The Australian Ray Gatt described the news as a “bombshell.”
