AFL finals 2018: Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson cracks it at media ‘sheep’
Take note, media: Don’t be too quick to compliment Alastair Clarkson.
There was plenty of praise for the four-time Hawthorn premiership coach across the past fortnight, with a number of analysts suggesting if anyone could come up with the tactics to plot the downfall of Richmond, it would be him.
But after the Tigers proved too strong to the tune of 31 points in the qualifying final, Clarkson took umbrage at claims he could pull out the tactics to topple the reigning premiers.
“I don’t mean to be too unflattering, but you guys are like a bunch of sheep,” Clarkson told reporters at his post-match press conference.
“Someone brings up the fact that Clarkson’s going to tactically have an impact on this game, (and they) haven’t watched the way I’ve coached for 14 years.
“We’re a system-based coaching side, and that’s why Richmond are so strong at the moment. They’re system-based.
“Every side’s that won premierships are system-based. None of it tactics.
“You’ll occasionally win a game with something spectacular, but not usually in finals.”
The comment would have been sure to catch some media members off guard, given the initial sentiment was designed to be a compliment to the future Hall Of Fame coach.
But the question remains: If the most successful coach of the modern era can’t engineer a way to stop the Tigers, who can?
