A side strain has brought Steve Smith’s Caribbean Premier League campaign to a premature conclusion.

Smith suffered the injury at the backend of his 40-run innings for the Barbados Tridents on Friday, with scans confirming a grade one abdominal tear.

As the injury is expected to sideline Smith for 7-10 days, by which point the tournament will have concluded, he has returned home to prepare for the Sydney Grade season with Sutherland. His first match of the season is on September 22.

“He had a slight tear and he had to go back, so it’s a really unfortunate situation,” Barbados Tridents coach Robin Singh said ahead of his side’s clash against the St Lucia Stars.

The Tridents went on to lose the match against by six wickets, with David Warner (42 off 45 not out) seeing the Stars home with 15 balls to spare.

The Tridents sit last on the ladder but are a mathematical chance of making the finals if they can win their final two games. It would still require fourth-placed St Kitts and Nevis to lose its final two matches, one of which is against the Tridents.

Smith scored 185 runs at 26.42 in the CPL and chipped in with three wickets.
