As expected, Chinese OEM Oppo announced the upcoming availability of its new flagship smartphone, the Oppo N3. Surprisingly, the company introduced a second smartphone, which seems equally interesting even if it packs slightly lower specs than the N3.

The new Oppo R5 is officially the slimmest smartphone on the planet at only 4.85mm. The other measurements are 148.9 x 74.5mm, while the weight is 155g (battery included).

This isn’t Oppo’s first try at the world’s thinnest smartphone title, as a while back the company launched the Oppo R3, which is only 6.3mm thick.

Besides the fact that it’s really slim, the Oppo R5 doesn’t really come with anything that would make it stand out in terms of hardware except perhaps for the 64-bit chipset.

It’s also worth mentioning that the smartphone will be available in silver and gold and will sell for $500 (€390). Unfortunately, Oppo did not share details on when exactly the world’s thinnest smartphone will make its debut on the market, but we imagine it can’t be too far away.

Software-wise, Oppo confirmed that the R5 would ship with ColorOS 2.0, which is based on Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. It’s unclear whether or not this smartphone will ever receive an Android 5.0 Lollipop update in the future, but since the R5 has yet to hit shelves there’s still time to confirm it.

It comes with 64-bit chipset, but lacks microSD card slot

Another important feature of the Oppo R5 is the 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, which is a 64-bit chipset. The smartphone also packs an Adreno 405 graphics processing unit and 2GB of RAM.

The R5 comes with 16GB of storage inside and lacks microSD card slot for memory expansion, so this is all you get unless you opt for some free cloud storage through various services.

On the back, Oppo R5 sports a 13-megapixel Sony Exmor IMX214 sensor camera with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus and 4K video recording. In the front, there’s a secondary 5-megapixel camera with 83 degree wide angle lens, which should be perfect for selfies and video calls.

Furthermore, the R5 boasts 5.5-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution and 423ppi (pixel per density).

When it comes to connectivity, Oppo R5 is an all-rounder. It offers both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, as well as LTE, USB on-the-go and GPS with A-GPS.

Last but not least, the smartphone is powered by a 2000 mAh battery with Rapid Charge, which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer.
