Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows is a new mobile game based on the popular TV show and book series available now on Apple Arcade for iOS devices. The game was developed by Devolver Digital, a prolific developer and publisher known for titles like Carrion and the recent smash hit Fall Guys.

The Game of Thrones TV show, based on the still unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, ended in May 2019. The end of the series was received exceptionally poorly, with fans arguing that the show's final season didn't properly follow through with a plot that had been building for years. The months following the release of the final episode saw viewers abandoning their admiration of the show en masse.

Given the sour note the series ended on, it's always surprising to see a brand new property released under the tarnished Game of Thrones IP. But that's just what the remaining Game of Thrones fans are getting in the form of Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows. This new game from Devolver is a "real-time idle game" that tasks the player with managing Game of Thrones' iconic Wall and the Night's Watch that guard and maintain it. The game is also set thousands of years before the events of the TV show and books, which could lead to some interesting lore opportunities. The game centers around sending expeditions of soldiers into the fearsome North and communicating with them through messenger ravens as they face the deadly perils of the infamous region. It looks like players will be faced with some truly harrowing choices as they face the dangers of the land beyond the wall.

Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows is available on Apple Arcade, a subscription service that gives players access to several mobile games for one monthly fee. The Arcade already hosts Exit the Gungeon, another prominent Devolver Digital title and a sequel to the beloved roguelike shooter Enter the Gungeon. Many of the most best mobile games available on iOS are now exclusive to Apple Arcade, which has drawn some ire from fans.

As bizarre as it is to see new content coming out of Game of Thrones, it can't be denied that Tale of Crows looks remarkable. The art style has a striking minimalistic beauty to it, and it's obvious from the trailer that the developers did their homework while they were designing the various fortresses that keep the famous Wall together. And regardless of what one thinks of Apple Arcade, the service does promise a lack of ads and in-app purchases, both of which are infamous for plaguing idle games like this one. As a franchise, Game of Thrones has a lot to make up for. It's unlikely that one mobile game will redeem the whole franchise, but at the very least, Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows looks like a perfectly fun game in spite of its franchise's troubled past.
