ASUS announced the Zenfone 2 at CES 2015 as the first phone to arrive in the wild with 4GB of RAM, but customers had to way until May to be able to order the product. Well, even though the Zenfone 2 hasn’t been out and about for long, word about ASUS’ next-gen flagship has already surfaced online.

We told you at some point that the phone might arrive with fingerprint scanner, and the company’s CEO himself claimed that the phone would no longer be making use of Intel chips and would be fueled by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 instead.

And today, the folks at Tech Gadgetsz bring us word that an interesting Zenfone model has been spotted in the Chinese TENAA database.

The model number of this device is ASUS Z00EDB, so in all probability, we’re looking at the Zenfone 3 or the modified version of the Zenfone 2.
Could this be ASUS' next-gen flagship (a low-end version of it)?

The spec list brings back Zenfone 5 vibes to an extent, but the volume rocker on the back and dual LED flash indicate that we’re actually looking at the Zenfone 3. A downgraded version of it.

The phone is listed with a 5-inch IPS display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The 1.2GHz quad-core 64-bit processor won’t probably bring an important performance improvement compared to the previous generation.

There are 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory (expandable up to 32GB via microSD card slot). The handset also offers an 8MP main camera with LED flash, low-light image, and HDR mode plus a 5MP frontal camera.

It’s also bundled with 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, microUSB, Bluetooth v4.0, and USB OTG.

Aesthetically, the phone is tipped to arrive with a metallic design (which is more often than not a feature of premium phones). The purported Zenfone 3 measures 143.7 x 71.5 x 10.66mm / 5.6 x 2.8 x 0.41 inches and tips the scales at 145g / 0.31lbs.

Last but not least, we’re being told that the phone will be available in black, white, red, blue, purple, gold and silver.

As you can see, the specs aren’t really flagship-worthy, but to be fair, ASUS rolled out Zenfone 2 variants with 720p displays and 2GB of RAM too, so the phone we have been talking about above might as well be an under-specced version of the Zenfone 3.
