Star Wars Original Trilogy Music Recreated in Amazing Acapella Medleys
Music from the original Stars Wars trilogy has been recreated on YouTube in an amazing acapella medley. 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope marked the beginning of one of the most iconic franchises of all time. Following a princess, smuggler, Wookie droids, and a moisture farmer who defy an evil Empire while confronting some serious familial issues, Star Wars has resonated with audiences around the world. The Skywalker saga, which began in the original trilogy, continued with the prequels and sequels, culminating with The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
It’s safe to say that the nine core films in the Skywalker saga wouldn’t exist without the iconic score of John Williams. The revered composer who’s also provided soundtracks for Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter, has been with the franchise since that first opening crawl. His music has contributed to a distinctive aspect of Star Wars’ spirit and tone. The original trilogy’s most memorable moments are bolstered by sweeping orchestrations—from the title theme and twin suns setting over Tatooine to a quirky cantina.
The Warp Zone on YouTube—who have also covered the prequels—recently shared an acapella medley encompassing the soundtrack of Star Wars' original trilogy. The video sees its performers dress up as every beloved character and cover themes including the “Main Title,” “Imperial March,” “Princess Leia’s Theme,” “Cantina Band,” “Binary Sunset,” and the “Finale.” Check it out below:
The Rise of Skywalker marked Williams' last venture into the galaxy far, far away. Despite any backlash revolving around the prequels and sequels, Williams scores have warranted consistent praise. With Disney/Lucasfilm making more stories for Star Wars in film and television, it’s been imperative to carefully curate scores as to meet the precedent set by Williams. So far, composers like Ludwig Göransson (who also composed Black Panther’s Oscar-winning score) have done a great job on projects like The Mandalorian, which captures the soul of Star Wars by sporadically alluding to Williams’ tracks while offering a fresh perspective. In many ways, The Mandalorian has set a new musical precedent.
Star Wars’ original theme will forever be one of the most recognizable pieces of music in cinematic history, its trumpet section preparing audiences for every new adventure. When Star Wars returns to the big screen courtesy of Rogue Squadron, Rian Johnson’s trilogy, or Taika Waititi’s upcoming film, if there’s an opening crawl, Williams’ track should remain. However, if it does not, droves of fans will continue to pay homage with remixes, covers, and acapellas like the one above.
