What player do you use to watch movies through?

I use VLC on my PC - been using it since I don't know when. Lately though, I have come up against a problem to do with AC-3 encoding. The box I use to play the video on my TV can't handle AC-3, so I have to change it to something it can handle, namely AAC. VLC can change the audio encoding, but I haven't figured out how to change the audio without also changing the video encoding. I'd like a program that simply and without fuss lets me change only the audio encoding and leave everything else as is. Can anyone recommend such a program - preferably open source?

You could try SMPlayer but I don't know if it will work. I'm using it on my PC and it works on everything I have tried so far.
